Side DJ Job Grew Into Big Business

From a lifeguard turned DJ, Marc Burgess found his calling in a profitable side business.

Q: Please state your name, home location, title and how you are involved with NAME Entertainers?

A: Marc Burgess, from Sanford, FL. I am the owner of Marc Burgess Productions and Burgess Travel Network. I'm an advisory board member for NAME Entertainers.

Q: Where did you grow up and what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I grew up in The Catskills/Hudson Valley area of New York. At different points of my life, I wanted to be a veterinarian and night club owner.

Q: How did you end up in your current job?

A: As a lifeguard at a resort in New York, we always had entertainment poolside and a couple of days a week, that was a “DJ” which meant we took turns playing our favorite records and cassettes over the PA system. When I moved to Florida, I was looking for a second job and answered an ad in the paper for weekend work as a DJ. They supplied equipment and training. It sounded fun, so I said, why not?

Q: What do you love best about your job?

A: Helping people have fun at some of the most important milestones of their lives.

Q: Why is it so important for freelance entertainers and venues to have insurance?

A: Living in a society where you can get sued for serving coffee that is “too hot”, you need to "CYA" and make sure you’re protected.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

A: Fiji. It’s paradise and the Fijian people are truly amazing.
